SJ.II, Society's Justice Innovations & Interventions is a 501c3 founded in 2022. SJ.II's founder, Monet Smith, wanted to create a criminal justice focused organization that works to reduce incarceration and recidivism by dealing with some of the root causes in society. Through this, SJ.II was founded in the demand for action for preventive solutions to crime and incarceration in communities.
The purpose of SJ.II is to reduce crime and incarceration in communities by targeting the issues that cause increase the tendency of individuals to participate in criminal deviancy in communities. We work to reform our criminal justice system through a preventive lens, to help foster a system that is focused rehabilitation, reforming individuals, communities and the system itself.
Our organization is based on principles of criminology, with the core principle focusing on what statistically works to reduce crime rates. As criminologists, we know that the leading cause of crime in communities are often structurally ingrained within communities themselves. Therefore, our mission is to address these root community issues in development of a criminal justice system that is not criminogenic and to reduce the number of Black and Brown bodies that enter the system.
We do this through our 3 pillars of programming: Community Engagement, Policy and Advocacy, and Youth Development.
